GPT Image 2.6 GIF Limits: Frames, Speed and Size
Updated 2026-11-05
Frame count: 2 to 16
Some documentation lists frame_count up to 64, but the API reference and live API enforce a maximum of 16. Developers report that 16-frame requests work and 17-frame requests fail with HTTP 400. The default is 9.
Frame duration: 20 to 2000 ms
frame_duration_ms sets how long each frame shows, from 20 ms to 2000 ms (default 200), rounded to 10 ms. 80–150 ms looks smooth for most loops; 300 ms or more gives a slideshow feel.
Output size
All frames share one image budget, so GIF frames are smaller than stills. A 1:1 GIF comes out at 512×512. Lowering the frame count does not increase the resolution.
Other restrictions
- GIF output works on generation only, not on edits or with input images.
- Streaming and partial images are not supported for GIF output.
- The Batch API is reported as unsupported for GPT Image 2.6 Flare.
